Short Story- Daily Visit to a Religious Place

Daily Visit to a Religious Place

I alongwith my wife were out from a local religious place and were collecting shoes. The man on duty recognised me and commented upon, “Dear Sir, I could not see you here during the last six months. Do you visit this place half yearly.” I could also identify the person commenting upon the visit. So I said, “Yes, I visit a religious place after one year. I try to consume whatever I listen and till that course does not become part of my life, I avoid to visit a religious place. It is just a futile exercise.” The man collecting and delivering shoes was surprised to hear all these comments from side. He started laughing and so many other devotees who were collecting or depositing shoes also laughed upon our talk. I sat and started wearing on shoes delivered to me. After finishing this work, I stood up and asked the man on the window to listen the question and then give me suitable answer. He stopped taking shoes and delivering shoes and this work was taken up by another Sewadar (serviceman). My first question was, “Have you been here when Bhaisahib recited Hukamnama from Sri Guru Granth Sahibji?”

“Yes I was very much present. I am daily visitor. I never took my breakfast till I hear Hukamnama and similarly I do not take my dinner till last ceremonies are completed here. I am not only a daily visitor, but I visit twice in a day. This is a routine in my life. This visit have become part of my life. I cannot avoid it. I never care whether the climate is favourable or unfavourable.” Most of the devotees were standing there and were taking interest in our discourse. My second question was,

“Were you present when Bhaiji recited Hukamnama today?”

“I have already said that I am daily visitor. Ask me some other question which could be useful for all of us present here. Otherwise you should not waste our time.”

My next question was,

“Do you recall some words from today’s a Hukamnana”

“ I listened with faith. But now I have forgotten the same.”

“Would you tell me the wordings of Hukamnama which you listened to yesterday?”

“No I cannot. I not bound to keep all these Hukamnama in my mind.

“Could you recall any of the Hukamnama recited during the last week?”

“No, I cannot” then I turned to the devotees who were standing there and were busy listening our discourses. I raised the same question for them,

“Could any one of you can tell what Hukamnana they have read on the notice board? None of them answer this question.

All started disbursing without answering my question. Then I started addressing them all, “We should come to a religious place. We should try to hear whatever is said here and then we should have an introspection and decided as to whether the recitations have got any connection with our day to day functioning and in our behaviour towards others around us. The guiding points recited here must become part of our life. If we can adopt this way of life, then we can come here daily. But till the first course is not complete, we have got no right to revisit this place.” I noticed that none of them was interested in my address and therefore, my wife put her right hand first finger on her lips and directed me to stop the address. I stopped and come out. This question is still in my mind and none around me could give me suitable answer.
